Local Information and Logistics

  • Location:

The project meeting will be held at the Perth Zoo in South Perth. The Board meeting on the 23rd is in the CIRA videoconference room at Curtin University.
You can find a map with locations marked here
  • Hotels and Accommodations

There are many accommodation options in South Perth and the city centre. The most convenient (and in our opinion, nicest) location for the project meeting will be to find accommodation in the South Perth area. South Perth also has a good selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes.
Searching hotel deal websites such as www.wotif.com or www.lastminutehotels.com.au is a good idea as well as Airbnb or Stayz Accommodation
Some info/options compiled by the Curtin admin team are:
  • Transportation to/from Perth Airport:

Buses run from Perth airport to the city busport and some hubs along the way: http://www.perthairport.com.au/ToTheAirport/PublicTransport.aspx
A taxi from Perth airport to South Perth or the city will be about $40. You do not have to tip taxi drivers in Australia. Payments via credit cards attract a surcharge.
If staying in the city, there is a ferry that runs between the city at the new Elizabeth Quay to South Perth. From there it is a 5 minute walk to the zoo past some very nice restaurants and cafes. Buses go from both the city centre and South Perth to Curtin (and the ARRC building for satellite meetings) and will take 20-30 mins.
  • Local Transportation:

Perth has a good bus and train network. Fares are paid via the electronic "Smartrider" card system or via paying cash at selected ticket vending machines or directly to the driver on buses. Although drivers take cash and give change, it is advisable to have the correct or approximately correct money for the fare. See: http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/SmartRider/Types-of-SmartRider
If you plan to use public transport a lot during your visit then getting a Smartrider card at one of the info centres is advisable. (http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/contact-us/infocentres)
  • Internet:

There will be internet at the zoo. Some cafes in Perth will provide free wifi although it is not as ubiquitous as the US. Some hotels provide free wifi, but many charge for it. If you have a smartphone, you can consider buying just a SIM with a prepaid data plan. These are available at many locations (newsagents, supermarkets). There are many brands available, but ultimately only 3 service providers in Australia (Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone). If you don't have time to shop around, going with Optus is a good bet for value for money. Often you will see vending machines at airports. $30 should buy you several GB of data.
  • Weather:

Perth winters are cool and mild but can be rainy. Bring a jacket and umbrella.
  • Associated meetings:

There will be busy weeks associated with the project meeting for:
    • EoR (contact Cath Trott)
    • GLEAM (contact Natasha Hurley-Walker)
